The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been going strong for the last 15 years, ever since its inception with Iron Man back in 2008. Over the years, the MCU has perfected the art of building an overarching plot through its projects broken down into several phases. And now, with phase 4 being wrapped up and the beginning of phase 5 right around the corner, the time is right to take a look at some of the very best the MCU has ever been.
Here are the top 10 greatest MCU movies to date.
10. Ant-Man (2015)
Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), a loveable thief recently released from prison, finds himself down on his luck as he desperately needs some money to pay for child support. This leads him to rob a mysterious high-tech suit from Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), a scientist, that lets him shrink himself at will, thus giving him superpowers and leading to him becoming Ant-Man. Scott’s adventure, despite being of little significance here, is rather fun to watch, and the viewers find themselves hooked to the loveable cast of characters — especially Luis and his masterful storytelling!
9. Black Panther (2018)
T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) returns to his homeland, the nation of Wakanda whose true technological potential is hidden from the rest of the world, to assume its throne after the death of his father T’Chaka. But his coronation isn’t all happiness and celebrations as he soon finds his rule being challenged by other tribes and has to quell the ensuing power struggle, as Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) lays claim to the throne himself. Packed with breathtaking action and full of charismatic acting, Black Panther makes for an immersive experience.
8. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
The movie follows the somewhat famous ragtag team of misfits, now renowned as the “Guardians of the Galaxy”, for their second bout. Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) and his crew are stranded on a planet in the aftermath of a mission where they meet a man named Ego (Kurt Russell) who claims to be Peter’s father and is also a Celestial, a god-like entity. Filled with zany humor and the guardians’ amusing chemistry, with some emotional story beats here and there, this action-packed adventure also sees Peter undergo some much-needed character growth and is all the better for it.
7. Iron Man (2008)
The one that started it all! Iron Man debuted when the superhero genre was beginning to hit its peak, amidst contemporaries such as Spider-Man 3 and The Dark Knight, and has stood the test of time. Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr.) story of his great escape from terrorists, his remarkable ingenuity and creation of the iconic Iron Man suit, and his journey from an insufferable rich brat to someone we later root for and care for is a marvel (pun intended) to behold.
6. Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Spider-man’s (Tom Holland) real identity gets revealed to the public at the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home, and all hell breaks loose for Peter and his friends. Out of options, Peter asks Dr. Strange for help, and he agrees to cast a spell that would make everyone forget Spider-Man’s real identity. But things inevitably go wrong, causing various multiversal threats and allies (if you know, you know) to show up. This movie is a celebration of the last 20 years of Spider-Man movies, but even beyond all the fan service, it tells a deeper, more heartfelt story.
5. Dr. Strange (2016)
The movie follows Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), an arrogant neurosurgeon who severely injured his hands in a car accident. Desperate for any kind of help, he ends up at Kamar-Taj, a secret temple in Kathmandu, seeking what he believes to be a sort of spiritual healing. He instead finds himself in the company of an age-old community of sorcerers who take him in and teach him their ways, eventually turning him into a powerful sorcerer who later has to help them safeguard their ancient magic and wisdom from dark sorcerers and monsters. The film is a graphical treat to the eyes with many memorable sequences and quotes.
4. Captain America: Civil War (2016)
In the face of unprecedented collateral damage over the years and the loss of many innocent lives when a recent job goes awry, the Avengers are faced with a tough decision – either let a UN panel oversee them, relinquishing autonomy, or disband and their vigilantism be met with legal consequences. Tensions rise as differences in opinions pit Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man and their respective teams against each other in a never-before-seen conflict set against the backdrop of an evil conspiracy that involves Cap’s long-lost best friend Bucky Barnes and the threat of remaining Hydra super soldiers. This quasi-Avengers film has everything fans were looking for and plays a significant role in developing future character relations.
3. Avengers: Endgame (2019)
The culmination of the entire Infinity Saga, a story 11 years in the making, Endgame had to follow an unimaginable premise set at the end of Infinity War, and it knocks it out of the park! Half the population is gone and with it, half the avengers as well. It is up to the remaining heroes to come together one more time to pull off a time heist unlike any other in order to save everyone who they couldn’t and end it with one last battle against Thanos and his forces. The movie had audiences roaring in excitement throughout and was an experience of a lifetime.
2. Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
The death of Odin lets Hela, his oldest daughter, escape her imprisonment and return to Asgard seeking its throne. It is up to Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston) to set aside their differences and come together to find unlikely allies and save Asgard from Hela’s tyranny while the threat of Surtur and Ragnarok, the impending doom of Asgard, looms in the background. From memorable fight sequences (like Thor vs. the Hulk) to a charming slate of new characters, this movie was arguably Thor’s greatest adventure on the big screen and everything comic book fans could hope for.
1. Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Just as Thor: Ragnarok directly led to Infinity War in the theaters, so does it lead to Infinity War rightfully at the top of this list! Before, Thanos was just the big bad guy in the shadows, but now he was more real a threat than ever. And that somber reality is set in right from the beginning, with the whole movie carrying a foreboding tone to it. Endlessly rewatchable, and highly quotable, this roller coaster ride of emotions ends in arguably the greatest twist in an MCU movie, leaving viewers in tears with its most poignant end. The movie took an unprecedented storytelling risk, and it paid off. Truly, the height of MCU to date.
